Climatic synthetic time series for the Mediterranean belt

Obiettivo

Objectives

The optimisation of energy costs and competitiveness is increasingly carried out through system simulation. This requires daily and hourly time series of meteorological parameters which are rarely available from the Meteorological Services, notably of solar irradiation on tilted planes, and of multivariate data (e.g. solar irradiation, temperature, humidity and wind simultaneously).

CliMed aims at developing statistical and stochastic models for Southern European countries (where data availability is worse). Such models will provide hourly data with statistical properties similar enough to observed data to enable its use for system simulation. CliMed is also a pilot project for improving the data supply capabilities of meteorological Atlases implemented on desktop computers.

Technical Approach

A data set of multivariate time series, covering the Mediterranean Belt area will be assembled. Solar radiation and temperature data togther with humidity and wind data will be included. A collection of programmes for RE and building simulation will be assembled. Sensitivity studies will be conducted, and related with other similar published studies. The most adequate time scales and levels of detail in simulation will be identified.

Existing adequate statistical and stochastic models, developed in the last two decades in the EU and abroad, will be tested. These include models reviewed and used in the context of the EUFRAT, PASCOOL and European Solar Radiation Atlas projects, as well as those implemented in software such as the swiss MeteoNorm or the portuguese MagiClim and P-Clima. In parallel, problem areas will be identified (e.g. the modelling of bivariate coupled time series of radiation and temperature). New or modified models capable of dealing with these unsolved problems will be constructed and tested. The system simulators will be used again, this time for estimating the accuracy levels related to the use of CliMed synthetic data, as compared with the use of observed data.

Expected Achievements and Exploitation

It is expected that the know-how on stochastic modelling of solar irradiation and temperature data will be significantly improved. The synthetic data generated will be of sufficiently high quality to be used in place of (in practice non existing) observed data for the simulation of RE and RUE systems. The know-how obtained will also constitute a basis for similar studies in Northern European areas.
The resulting statistical models of time series will be built into user-friendly software and as algorithms compatible with other EU projects (e.g. PASCOOL). The partners will be able to supply synthetic data for the Mediterranean Belt on request, as printed data, electronic files, and through the Internet.
