Exploitable results

The development of compact heat exchangers, which achieve large energy savings compared to conventional designs, are essential for the intensification of industrial processes. This project has established the technical and design information required to produce new, compact, two phase heat exchange devices. Process intensification in industry requires the development of effective and reliable compact heat exchangers for evaporation tasks. Their application, due to their increased effectiveness, will also significantly reduce energy consumption. Previous work (JOUE-CT90-0041) on enhanced evaporation, established the advantages to be gained by using special surfaces and confined spaces for boiling heat transfer i.e. improved performance and reduced size, weight and price. This project utilised and extended these results to the two-phase flow experienced in narrow channels. It also included the design and testing of new compact evaporator arrangements.
