Characterization of glazings for daylighting applications

Obiettivo

Many types of new glazings are been developed for passive solar use in buildings. A validated database of glazing properties is a pre-requisite for technology transfer to communities.

The objective of the project is to characterise innovative transparent and translucent materials in the visible spectrum, for daylighting applications in buildings with significant involvement of the manufacturers.

Two documents will be produced : a full report on the results of laboratory and field monitoring, computer simulations, glazing classification and quick assessment procedures, and a second document summarizing the results and giving recommendations for building designers.
There were three main results. The first is a database of glazing properties, obtained by measurements in two independent laboratories. The second is a file format to allow portability of measured or simulated glazing properties to light simulation softwares, and the third are standard procedures for assessing the properties in laboratories or on-site.

The results are useful for developing measurement procedures to be used as international standards. This field of competence still has some distance to go before the methods are used as standard and usual practices in architectural and constructive work. The project is forward-thinking as the designer's market is not yet demanding these services, but such a service is becoming usual in the industry of new glazing technology.
Parameters which allow a precise description of glazing photometry will be identified as well as the experimental procedures to measure them. A first set of samples will be tested in order to produce spatial and spectral data. These data will be processed for analysis, classification and input for two computer programmes GENELUX and RADIANCE.

A data reduction technique is proposed, to allow a quick assessment by the designers as well as numerical simulations. This will include the development of models simulating the photometric effects inside the buildings.

A selection of ten buildings equipped with glazing materials will be monitored over Europe. The monitoring will include photographs and measurements (illuminances, luminances, colour temperatures) and interviews of the designers and the building occupant will be carried out. The results from the campaign will be discussed and evaluated with builders and manufacturers to assess the potential of new glazings for daylighting applications. Central and Eastern European partners from Slovenia and Roumenia are contributing to the project for the calibration and the improvement of measurement procedures. They will also provide glazing samples and participate in the measuring campaign. The final results of the monitoring campaign will be published in collaboration with the INNOBUlLD project (JOU2-CT92-0217).
