Conversion of natural gas to synthesis gas, C2+ hydrocarbons and alternativefuels

Obiettivo

Natural gas, due to its wide availability and low cost, could be considered as another material for the production of new added value products. The aim of this project consists of the development of novel chemical processes for the conversion of natural gas into synthesis gas, higher hydrocarbons and alternative fuels.

The project comprises three major tasks:
1) Catalytic partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas,
2) Reforming of methane with carbon dioxide,
3) Oxidative coupling of methane to C2+ hydrocarbons.

1. In the catalytic partial oxidation of methane to synthesis gas and reforming of methane with carbon dioxide (Tasks 1,2), the primary objectives are the development of novel, highly selective and stable catalysts which are resistant to coking and can be operated over extended periods of time, at complete methane conversion, under conditions of high temperature and pressure. The catalyst development work will be accompanied by detailed kinetic studies and state of the art mechanistic analysis in order to identify the key elementary reaction steps and intermediate species on the catalyst surface. This information will provide fundamental insights on the underlying catalytic processes and valuable feedback for improving the performance characteristics of the catalysts. Reaction engineering and mechanistic kinetic models will be developed for selected catalyst systems that have shown sufficient potential for industrial application. These kinetic models will be used for reactor analysis and design by computer simulation with the aim of optimising the performance of industrial synthesis gas reactors. Various reactor types and configurations will be explored with emphasis on the development of efficient heat management strategies and optimum gas mixing patterns.

2. In the oxidative coupling of methane to C2+ hydrocarbons (Task 3), the best catalysts already developed by the participating research groups will be fine-tuned and optimised for industrial application. A further objective is the development of a novel, combined oxidative coupling/carbon dioxide reforming of methane process with the aim of exploiting the excessive heat liberated by oxidative coupling and the produced carbon dioxide to drive the highly endothermic methane reforming reactions. The possibility of using fluidised bed configurations for conducting the combined process will be fully explored.
The work will be supported by bubbling and high-velocity fluidised bed computer simulations and scale up investigations. Detailed flowsheeting and economic evaluations of a conceptual plant for this new process will also be carried out.
