The project aimed to set up and test a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) planar reactor within the 20 kW class with metallic bipolar separator plates. This design is characterised by an extended multiple array concept. The biggest stack produced by the project consisted of 80 layers assembled in series, and delivered a power output of 11 kW. In recent years in the EU, the planar design of SOFCs has generally been preferred to the traditional tubular design. This is primarily because researchers have realised that it is too difficult to reduce the manufacturing costs associated with tubular designs. There are two different methods for producing planar cell designs, using either metallic or ceramic bipolar separator plates. The main objective of the project was to invent and test a sack design based on a metallic separator plate using a newly developed metal with well-adapted thermal expansion coefficient. A further objective was the development of glass ceramic bonds for improved joining techniques.
