A possible route for the capture of CO2 is the recirculation of the largest volume of flue gases, consistent with combustion. This results in a CO2-rich discharge gas which meets the requirements of recovery techniques i.e. enhanced oil recovery techniques. Such an approach needs to consider the power cycles, the availability of carbon dioxide gas turbine and the use of concentrated oxygen for combustion. In the case of integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC), coal or lignite gasification can be considered with carbon dioxide as a gasification agent. This project explored the use of carbon dioxide, steam and argon mixtures as working agents in power cycles, and as gasification agents in coal/lignite gasification. The project addressed aspects of oxygen/carbon dioxide (O2/CO2) gas turbine cycles, including O2/CO2 combustion, CO2 gas turbines and CO2 gasification. Designs were investigated for a carbon dioxide/natural gas evaporative cycle and for a carbon dioxide IGCC combined cycle. Pressurized combustion with maximum carbon dioxide recirculation was investigated in a 100kW oxyfuel combustor. The operation of existing and new turbo-machinery on carbon dioxide was analysed. Gasification using carbon dioxide was investigated and kinetic and fluidization data obtained. Economic analysis of the systems was also undertaken.
