Stand-alone PV (photovoltaic) plants cannot ensure uninterrupted power supply without energy storage. The PV plant developed and installed within the framework of the project consists of a PV generator and a hybrid energy store, which is a combination of a micro- hydraulic system and batteries. The effectiveness of this system has been experimentally assessed. Almost all stand-alone PV plants are equipped with battery storage systems. Batteries are expensive and heavy and have a comparatively short life expectancy and a need for continuous monitoring and maintenance. Experience with PV installations show that this cannot be guaranteed for PV installations in remote areas. This has led to a demand for PV plants with reliable alternative energy storage systems at remote sites, e.g. villages not connected to the grid. In this project the use of water for energy storage was examined as an innovative alternative to the use of batteries. Due to the multi-use capability of pumped water (energy storage, drinking water, irrigation) and its almost unlimited storage duration, water is an ideal energy storage medium for remote areas in Europe. The objective of this project was to develop a stand-alone PV plant with an optimal combination of centralised and decentralised PV generators and to develop schemes for the efficient use of water for energy storage. This involved the experimental study of the use of micro-hydraulic storage systems in combination with batteries.
