Photon recycling in heterojunction thin-film

There is wide interest in Europe, notably in Germany, France, Belgium and the UK in thin-film solar cells. This project, which analysed the heterojunction characteristics of thin-film solar cells, has led to significant moves forward in the understanding of this phenomena. It has provided answers to design questions regarding how best to obtain the best cell efficiencies. This project in semiconductor theory involved the work of the Helio-Carnot Club which is involved in the theoretic investigation of thin-film solar cell efficiencies. The objective of the project was to obtain theoretical guidelines for the optimisation of these cells by analysing heterojunction characteristics from a fundamental viewpoint. Phenomenological correction factors to all characteristics were thus interpreted in terms of more fundamental properties, e.g. recombination properties, to obtain efficiency curves from which design questions can be answered.
