Atmospheric pressure combustion of pulverised coal and coal based blends for power generation

Exploitable results

To be widely applicable, pulverized coal burners must perform satisfactorily across a wide range of coal types, including the imported coals and coal blends being introduced to the European market. The project was a co-ordinated programme of research to determine the effects of coal quality and blending on the performance of pulverized coal-fired power plant boilers, equipped with advanced firing technologies for pollution control. The work consisted of eighteen sub-subjects involving laboratory, semi-industrial and full industrial scale investigations. The project was initially organized into four basic research areas, each having its own technical co-ordinator. These focused on: combustion of coal blends and coal/sewage sludge (three sub-projects); advanced burner development for emissions reductions (six sub-projects); the effects of coal properties on pulverized coal fired boilers with advanced firing techniques (five sub-projects); and the development of advanced diagnostics (four sub-projects).
