The increased use of daylighting and natural ventilation in buildings in Europeoffers significant opportunities for energy saving by reducing the need for electricalappliances. This research was aiming to find innovative and useful solutions for thecontrol and use of daylighting and natural ventilation in buildings, through thetesting of innovative technologies and/or techniques. All of the studies were toinvolve the building envelope as the essential element in controlling light andenergy flows. The research undertaken focused upon two test devices. Firstly, the "solar box" wasused to test the use of sunlight for illuminating office spaces. Natural light can bebrought deep into an office space by utilising light scoops. The aim was to improvelight quality in offices by making use of, and redistributing, daylight. Additionalcomputer simulations using a technique called "raytracing" were also used. Secondly, the climatic box, this device was used to test the concept of a "thermal chimney"in the form of a double facade. A ventilated facade provides a means for regulatingthe temperature of a building naturally, thus reducing the amount of energy neededfor air-conditioning and heating. The project results were to be applied in the design of the Daimler Benz headquartersin Potsdamer Platz, Berlin.
