Exploitable results

To date, there is no uniform method to compare and evaluate the performance of biomass gasifier plants. The project aimed to develop procedures in the form of a standard (protocol) for the testing of producer gas quality from biomass gasifiers, and was a complementary study to contract JOU2-CT92- 0208. The results will be useful for researchers, consultants, manufactur-ers and users of the technology, and have been presented as the basis of a draft international standard. One of the most effective technologies for the production of electricity from biomass is the gasifier or pyrolysis plant coupled to a gas engine. The latter would typically be an open gas turbine or an internal combustion engine generator set. Gasification is widely seen as an attractive alternative for generating power due to several advantages over combustion. The major problem with this technology is the carry-over of undesirable tars and particulates into the engine or turbine. Maintenance costs are increased and the life of the equipment considerably shortened. The project aimed to establish a set of reliable and comprehensive standard procedures for testing of the producer gas quality from biomass gasifiers.
