The objective of the SAPHIR project is to develop and evaluate/verify photovoltaics (PVs) as power source for primary health care (PHC) clinics for application in developing countries, and to do so as autonomous "turn-key" packages to reduce both design and installation faults and to ensure fast and easy commissioning regardless of local conditions. In order to allow a later high penetration of the autonomous PV powered PHC clinics, low cost of the final units is an essential goal.
The SAPHIR project intends to develop and verify the viability of using photovoltaics (PV) as power source for primary health care (PHC) activities in developing countries by providing autonomous "turn-key" packages to reduce both design and installation faults and to ensure fast and easy commissioning regardless of local conditions. In order to allow a later high penetration of the autonomous PV powered PHC clinics, low costs of the final units are an essential goal. Two approaches or concepts are planned:
- a turn-key containerized PHC clinic with integrated PV system - a portable / collapsible PHC clinic including PV system Both approaches include the development or adaption/optimization for PV application of the following appliances:
- fluorescent room lights, rechargeable flashlights and OP lamps - vaccine refrigerator/freezer in compliance with WHO standards and requirements
- sterilizer in compliance with WHO standards and requirements - water purifier
- evt. telecommunication In order to optimize the PV power plant in this context special modules using bi-facial cells and new charge controllers are to be developed in the project, and special emphasis will be put on the integration of the PV modules in the container and on developing a fault tolerant controller to increase availability of electricity from the PV system. A prototype of the containerized, respectively the portable / collapsible PHC clinic including PV system and all relevant appliances will be manufactured and evaluated/verified both as to technical and medical performance during a 12 month period of operation at the Danish Marselisborg Hospital.
Based on experiences with the prototypes it is planned to further develop and refine both concepts - if found viable, and to manufacture 3-5 units of each concept to be field tested in selected developing countries in collaboration with the WHO, Geneva, and the local health authorities for another period of 12 months.
