Obiettivo
To follow up the various activities of the European Sorghum network.
Most European crops originated without Europe and have adapted to the northern zones in the past centuries. Little attention has been paid to photoperiodism and particularly to coldness sensitivity. For instance sorghym bicolour (L). Moench has suffered in several ways from that sensitivity:
the frost susceptibility of the species restricts the number of varieties at high latitudes, only the early varieties able to loop their cycle within the 6 months free of frost will produce;
the chilling temperatures at the beginning and at the end of the growing season can affect the germination and the maturation processes;
cold nights can generate a pollinic sterility with consequent falling of the yield.
This study utilizes the grain sorghum genotype FBH-05 to test the effects of: calcium peroxide Ca02 (Ixper 75) seed coating on the emergence of the sweet sorghum genotypes; elutrilithe spreading on the emergence of the sweet sorghum genotypes; and the slope and the orientation of the seed beds. The soil temperatures are higher on the inclined planting beds; the time of germination is reduced and the plantlets of the inclined beds maintain such a lead that the FBH05 genotype reaches the flowering stage while the same genotype reaches only the last leaf stage on flat soil. Calcium peroxide can be considered real insurance against low temperatures and excessive rainfalls which occur frequently during the sowing periods. The spreading of elutrilithe on the soil allows a faster reheating of the epipedon and in combination with inclined seed beds the effect is emphasized.
The use of phytotechnics such as CaO2 coating, elutrilithe spreading and inclined seed beds is effective on parameters like emergence rate and rapidity of sweet sorghum seeds. These phytotechnics seem a real solution to the northern European countries for greater yields of sorghum bicolor.
To liaise with the members of the network in order to synthesize the numerous activities. If necessary the contractor will play an active role in the research with the agreement of the other partners. A synthesis report will be made by the end of the contract to be used as a guide for the scientific committee.

To set up on a regional scale in Wallonia an integrated project aiming at producing bio fuels and industrial by-products. In this respect, an assessment of the technical, economical and environmental possibilities will be done. This study will consider the valorisation of biomass production for energy and industry. (Ethanol, pyrolitic oils paper paste derived from bagasse).
