Ziel
The PRIDE project intends to develop a broker service to support the identification and delivery of information services over the Global Information Infrastructure. The PRIDE directory service will provide support for authorisation, registration & cost recovery and integration with other interfaces to library services. Such services are essential in networked service scenarios where:
the information and support services may be inside & outside the library domain;
the users may go anywhere for their service requirements;
the service providers may seek patrons anywhere.
Technical approach
PRIDE will build value added, standards based services (using such as LDAP, X.500 WHOIS++, SET) around the distributed applications protocols already under deployment (e.g. Z39.50 ISO ILL) using scaleable open architectures (e.g. CORBA) and pervasive interfaces (e.g. WWW/JAVA).
Key issues
PRIDE will enable the user to gain unified access to a global range of information, resources and services in a more efficient, scaleable and functional manner by facilitating:
unified source of both library-based and networked service descriptions;
identification of suitable resources and services as a prelude to searches;
declaration of personal profiles accessible to disclosure agents (e.g. Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) Services);
authentication & authorisation for service access & electronic payments services.
One-stop declaration of personal information not multiple service registrations.

Envisaged user groups
Users, in the wide sense, of the project can be classified as follows:
library and information service intermediaries,
library system suppliers,
information service providers,
end users, such as researchers within academe, commerce and administration.
Impact and benefits
The PRIDE solution brings wide area information to more people in a serviceable framework by opening up services in a cost effective manner to the networked public, not just to local or physical subscribers - thus enfranchising more people to use a widespread existing resource.
