Obiettivo
From the general objective of ensuring the long-term re-establishment of brown bear populations in the Pyrenees, the project's specific objectives of carrying on the actions launched during the 1993 LIFE project, notably releasing three more bears, derive logically.
The habitat and the species' potential distribution will be mapped using a geographic information system (GIS), and these maps will allow future expansion of the bear populations and management of human activities (forestry, stockraising, hunting...) to be planned in those areas occupied by the brown bear.
To improve the availability of food resources, fruit trees and berry bushes will be planted in the areas most often visited by the bears which have been released into the wild. In sensitive zones, forestry tracks will be closed to traffic and timber cutting can be temporarily suspended. Actions to support stockraising in the bear zones are also foreseen: assistance will be given to herdsmen, guard dogs will be procured for them, enclosures for the livestock erected and material for the summer grazing infrastructure, which will be fitted with radio telephones, ferried up by helicopter. Damages caused by bears will be indemnified.
The brown bear (Ursus arctos) occurs in seven EU Member States but in five of them (Greece, Italy, Austria, Spain and France) the bear populations are under such grave threat that the species is considered a priority under the Habitats Directive. In France only 4 to 5 native bears remain between the Aspe and Ossau valleys in the western Pyrenees. Poaching and fragmentation of its habitat by the construction of forestry and livestock tracks have brought this species to the brink of extinction in the Pyrenees.
During the 1993 LIFE project "Conservation programme for threatened vertebrates in the Pyrenees" the first phase of a programme to reintroduce bears brought in from Slovenia was carried out in the central Pyrenees (Haute-Garonne), in an area where the animal had disappeared at the end of the 1980s.
