Obiettivo
This project sets itself the aim of restoring the optimum conditions for the conservation of the fauna, flora and ecosystems present. This is to be achieved by removing garbage and restoring springs and pools which were originally present but were sealed or filled in during the past centuries. Strips of woodland will be planted or broadened along watercourses, In order to create ecological corridors for wildlife and to act as barriers to polluting seepage from agricultural activities.
It is also planned to buy some sections of land or the user rights to springs or from those with title to use the footpaths inside the site. Agriculture compatible with the environment will be promoted and the goal is to reduce the input into the surface and groundwater of chemicals used in crop farming by at least 80%.
Visitor access to the area will be regulated and controlled. A programme to monitor the impact on the plant and animal species of the measures undertaken will be set up. Education and awareness actions will be targeted at the users of the site, the farmers and local school pupils.
The Fontane Bianche di Lancenigo are located in the middle of a group of springs, near the Melma River, and very close to sizeable townships. The vegetation comprises species characteristic for lowland woods and is rich and extensive, thanks to the optimal quality of the spring waters. This zone also includes habitats of Community interest (e.g. mixed oak-elm-ash forests), for which any alteration to the site would create an irreversible problem.
Various bird species listed on Annex I of the Birds Directive nest here, such as the kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) amongst others. The European pond terrapin (Emys orbicularis), the Italian agile frog (Rana latastei) and the yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata) occur as well; noteworthy is also the presence of the freshwater crayfish.
The ecological integrity of the site is threatened by various factors of human origin, such as seepage of chemical residues from agriculture, illicit waste dumps, unregulated cutting of trees and uncontrolled access, and the habitats and species on the site risk disappearing altogether.
