New low-cost procedure for sanitary landfill leachates treatment

Ziel

The aim of this project is to validate a new scheme of landfill leachates treatment. Three demonstration sites were chosen. These sites have been selected which cover the majority of cases: realization of a new site, modification of an old site and upgrade of an existing system.

The system consists of an aerated lagoon to remove the bulk of the organic load, followed by a rapid sandfilter to eliminate suspended matter and a slow sandfilter that is preseeded with nitrifying bacteria to obtain almost 100% nitrification of the effluent. The slow filter also makes it possible to remove the bulk of the refractory chemical oxygen demand (COD). The biogas which is generated within the tip is recovered and used to keep the sandfilter sufficiently warm, thereby ensuring optimal nitrification yields throughout the year. The final treatment consists of an epuvalisation process. This method is based on the nutrient film technic (NFT) - a high-yield hydroponic technique - to which was added a second technique called 'nutrition par écoulement permanent' (NEP) or 'continuous nutrient flow' which makes the system original. Bringing together in one treatment scheme the various techniques yields a highly effective system at minimal cost. Besides its low cost, the scheme is very flexible and modular. This adaptation ability allows it to be integrated into any existing setups, confering a great utilization potential on the scheme.
