Obiettivo
The Canary Islands contain one of Europe's richest plant communities, and the LIFE project in question targets five species ranked as priority by the Habitats Directive. These species occur in the formation known as 'monteverde' which groups laurel forests and heathlands with Myrica faya. Such habitats, a Habitats Directive priority in their own right, are located in the northern parts of the five Canary islands, subjected to the trade winds and the fogs coming in from the sea. The project will be carried out on the islands of Gomera, Hierro, la Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria in 10 sites proposed by the Canaries government to become part of the Natura 2000 network.
Traditional exploitation of the monteverde for wood, coupled to building and urbanization, have led to a degeneration and reduction of this habitat, which now barely occupies a third of its original surface area. The five plant species targeted, which are very vulnerable on account of the limited size of their occurrences, are furthermore threatened by the lowering of the water table, grazing and illegal collection of specimens.
The project seeks to ensure the long-term survival of the five targeted species, by increasing their populations and their distribution and by reducing the threats connected to human activities. The first step is to collect seed and rootstock from each of the populations of the species concerned. Part of this material will be preserved in seed banks, cultivated in nurseries or in hothouses, and if necessary, in vitro cultures will be propagated. Actions in the field consist in reinforcing existing populations and reintroducing specimens to sites where the species has already disappeared. The project also plans to come to grips with the various threats through awareness-raising measures such as disseminating information brochures and carrying out publicity campaigns.
