Implementation of management plan for Pylos Lagoon and Evrotas Delta, Natura 2000 sites in Greece

Obiettivo

Over the past 30 - 40 years land reclamation in the Pylos lagoon has diminished the wetland area from about 750 to 400ha, of which 250ha are wetland in sensu strictu. In 1984 the lagoon was leased for fish farming purposes and a permanent connection with the sea was made in order to increase fish production. Because of this, and also as a result of the diversion of the springs that used to bring freshwater to the lagoon, average salinity values reached high levels from 1993 onwards. Furthermore, problems with water circulation and the lack of surface water inflow led to severe reduction of primary biomass production. The unregulated, dramatic increase in tourist activity is another destructive factor. Finally, Pylos harbour is a refuelling station for tankers en route to the Middle East.

The large-scale degradation and decline of wetland habitat in the Evrotas delta over the past 50 years is mainly due to the expansion of agriculture. Recently, the extensive sand dune system and sandy beach became the focus of rapidly increasing tourism activity. Finally, the important marine ecosystems of the Lakonikos Gulf are the fishing grounds for a sizeable fishing fleet.

At the Pylos site measures will be undertaken to restore habitats and control tourist and visitor access along the sand dune system, as well as to prevent catastrophes in the event of oil spills in Navarino Bay. The project is to improve habitat quality by reducing disturbance and illegal hunting pressure. Populations of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) are to be conserved by protecting and managing nesting areas. The project will work for the benefit of waterfowl by restoring prime threatened habitat and preventing nesting failures caused by changing water levels. It will try to alleviate the effects of cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo sinensis) on fisheries and prevent negative public reaction towards fish-eating birds.

At the Evrotas site the LIFE project is to protect and restore sand dunes from erosion and habitat destruction, and will monitor agricultural activity in order to prevent any further reduction in the area and quality of waterfowl habitat through the expansion of cultivated land at the expense of wetland. It will also try to maintain the loggerhead turtle population and to bring about its long-term increase .

Programma(i)
