Obiettivo
The project objective is the setting up of functional, practical and feasible cycle networks utilising the existing road system and infrastructure of the four main towns of Cyprus, in order to encourage the use of bicycles in the day to day activities of the citizens and the cities' visitors. Furthermore, it aims at promoting a healthier, more economical and environment-friendly means of transport as opposed to the traditional use of the private car. The scope of the study is to design comprehensive bicycle networks, incorporate them in the respective local plans and prepare the ground and recommend all necessary actions for their implementation.
Cyprus, being an island with unique and delicate ecosystems and with limited resources, has to be extremely cautious with environmental issues. Land transportation policy and management of future traffic demand are major problems. Comprehensive studies on these subjects were completed for several cities in 1993 and 1994. On the basis of these studies, among the necessary steps to be taken, there is the development of a series of measures, principally managerial and low cost, which will accommodate and reconcile the demands of private cars, public transport, bicycles, pedestrians and other modes of transport.
Actions and means involved:
- Conduct of surveys to determine public opinion and response to the project;
- Collection of data at local level / Collection of background information through expert consultation;
- Visits of officers to relevant European countries / Visits of the experts to the project area;
- Public information and participation;
- Design of pilot scheme for one of the four towns;
- Determination and clarification of the fundamental design principles and incorporation of these principles in the design of the cycle networks of the other three towns using computer programme support;
- Actions towards the implementation of the project including demonstration schemes in each town.
The expected result of the project is to increase public awareness with regard to the benefits arising from the use of the bicycle as a means of transport and to prepare the ground for the realisation of the proposal. The completion of the design stage of the project will enable its proposers to increase pressure on public and private bodies to fund its construction and subsidise efforts for its full scale implementation throughout the whole of the island.
