Obiettivo TO PRODUCE BIODEGRADABLE SURFACTANTS, NEW NON TOXIC NATURAL WOOD PRESERVING CHEMICAL, CONTROLLED RELEASE FERTILIZERS AND BIOCIDES FROM PAPERMILLS AND FOREST EXPLOITATION WASTE. THE PROPOSED APPLICATIONS REQUIRE MINIMUM CHEMICAL TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE WASTE WOOD CHEMICALS AND WOULD ALLOW EXTENSIVE ADVANCE IN THE BIOTECHNOLOGY OF AROMATIC COMPOUNDS AND GENETIC MANIPULATIONS OF BACTERIA. I.- SEPARATION PROCESSES: SEPARATION OF THE PRODUCTS TO BE VALORIZED (CARBOHYDRATE DERIVATIVES, EXTRACTIVES AND LIGNIN) WILL BE PERFORMED USING FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION, FRACTIONAL PRECIPITATION AND SOLVENT EXTRACTION ACCORDING TO THE TYPE OF WASTE CONSIDERED (SEE F I SPANISH PROGRAM). II.- TRANSFORMATION OF THE LACTONES DERIVED FROM HEMICELLULOSE AND CELLULOSE DEGRADATION INTO BIODEGRADABLE SURFACTANTS: THESE LACTONES REPRESENT ABOUT 15% OF THE INITIAL WOOD USED IN THE KRAFT PULPING PROCESS. RECENT WORK PERFORMED IN OUR LABOARTORY HAS SHOWN THAT THE LACTONES OF ALDONIC ACIDS FORM EASILY AMIDES AND ESTERS WITH FATTY AMINES AND ALCOHOLS. THESE AMIDES AND ESTERS HAVE LIQUID CRYSTAL PROPERTIES, FORM MICELLAR SOLUTION IN WATER AND ARE BIODEGRADABLE. SURFACTANT PROPERTIES OF THE MIXTURE OF AMIDES AND ESTERS OBTAINED BY REACTION OF THE MIXTURE OF LACTONES DERIVED FROM ALKALINE PULPING PROCESSES WITH DODECYLAMINE AND FURTHER REACHED EITHER WITH ETHYLENEOXIDE OR CHLOROSULFONIC ACID HAVE ALSO BEEN RECENTLY DESCRIBED. IN THE PRESENT WORK, THE MIXTURE OF LACTONES DERIVED FROM PAPERMILL SPENT KRAFT LIQUOR WILL BE REACTED WITH DIFFERENT FATTY AMINES AND ALCOHOLS. THE SURFACTANT PROPERTIES AND BIODEGRADABILITY OF THE OBTAINED PRODUCTS WILL BE MEASURED. ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF THE PROCESSES AND PRODUCTS WILL CONTINUOUSLY SUPPORT THE RESEARCH. III.- ISOLATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF WOOD PRESERVING MATERIALS. IN THE COURSE OF A PRECEDING CONTRACT WITH THE EEC, WE HAVE OBSERVED THAT EUCALYPTUS WOOD, EVEN WHEN VERY FINELY DIVIDED, DOEN' T HYDROLYSE INTO GLUCOSE WHEN SUBJECTED TO CELLULOSES IN THE ABSENCE OF PRETREATMENT WHEREAS THE CELLULOSE FRACTION OF OTHER LIGNIN CELLULOSIC MATERIALS TRANSFORM INTO GLUCOSE WITH A MODERATE YIELD OF 10 TO 20% IN THE SAME CONDITIONS. THE EXTRACTIVES OF EUCALYPTUS WOOD AND OF EUCALYPTUS SPENT LIQUOR WILL BE ISOLATED, FRACTIONNATED AND IDENTIFIED BY CHROMATOGARPHIC, INFRA-RED, MASS SPECTROMETRIC AND NMR TECHNIQUES. IIII.- TRANSFORMATION OF KRAFT LIGNIN INTO CONTROLLED RELEASE MATRIX FOR FERTILIZERS, FUNGICIDES, INSECTICIDES AND PESTICIDES. INTRODUCTION OF THE ACTIVE PRODUCTS IN A SLOWLY DISAGGREGATING MATRIX WOULD ALLOW THEIR CONTROLLED RELEASE IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
