Obiettivo
Glass-ceramics offer considerable potential for many engineering applications but in common with many ceramics, would benefit from an increase in fracture toughness. The means of achieving high levels of fracture toughness in these materials are not established and a major aspect of the project is to compare the methods used in sintered ceramics, that is fibrous or particulate toughening, in selected glass- ceramic compositions to determine which would be the best method for these materials.
Glass ceramic matrices were successfully reinforced with both particulate and whisker reinforcement materials. Both methods resulted in significant increases in flexural strength and fracture toughness but the most interesting result was the considerable increase in reliability which can be achieved.
GLASS-CERAMICS OFFER MUCH POTENTIAL IN MANY ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS AND WOULD BENEFIT BY INCREASED FRACTURE TOUGHNESS.
THE MEANS OF ACHIEVING HIGH LEVELS OF FRACTURE TOUGHNESS IN THESE MATERIALS ARE NOT ESTABLISHED AND IT IS IMPORTANT TO DETERMINE WHICH OF THE TWO PRINCIPAL METHODS USED IN SINTERED CERAMICS, THAT IS FIBROUS OR PARTICULATE TOUGHENING, WILL BE THE PRIME METHODS FOR GLASS-CERAMICS.
THE PROPOSED COLLABORATION WILL BRING TOGETHER TWO RESEARCH AREAS WITH COMPETENCE IN GLASS, GLASS-CERAMICS AND COMPOSITES. SAINT-GOBAIN RECHERCHE HAS BEEN WORKING ON GLASSES AND GLASS-CERAMICS REINFORCED WITH CONTINUOUS SIC FIBRES AND IS EXPERIENCED IN THE LARGE SCALE PRODUCTION OF MATERIALS. GEC RESEARCH HAS WIDE EXPERIENCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A LARGE RANGE OF GLASS-CERAMICS AND COMPOSITES STRUCTURES AND SOME EXPERIENCE IN PRODUCING A ZIRCONIA TRANSFORMATION TOUGHENED GLASS-CERAMIC. FURTHER, GEC IS A USER OF MATERIALS IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL EQUIPMENT AND IS PARTICULARLY WELL QUALIFIED TO RECOGNIZE THE MERIT OF, AND POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF NEW COMPOSITES.
