A system has been developed for the continuous analysis of the raw materials used in cement works. Both analysis of fine products before introduction to the production run and analysis of crude precrushed materials are made. Using this system, it is hoped that significant reductions in industrial infrastructure can be made.
The operation of a cement plant involves systematic analysis of the raw materials.
Online analysis enables a reduction in the equipment necessary for preblending or blending and a substantial improvement in the quality of the clinker by reducing the variations in composition of the material being fed to the kiln. The study of online analysis of cement raw materials by prompt gamma neutron activation (PGNA) analysis, comprises 2 distinct parts: analysis of the coarse, precrushed products, and analysis of the fine products before their introduction into the kiln. The achievement of these objectives was beset with a number of difficulties related to process control which have subsequently been resolved and testing will resume.
A feasibility study was carried out of the analysis of coarse, precrushed material on a belt conveyor using PGNA analysis, aided by the Moca software package. Difficulties inherent in this approach are the problem of confining the neutrons within the transported material, and that of the correction of the intensities of the different characteristic radiations for interelement effects (owing for example to the presence of water), and for variations in thickness and apparent density of the material, that is necessary for quantitative elemental analysis of the material.
The feasibility studies nevertheless gave positive results, but the construction of a pilot would have taken too long.
A pilot is functioning satisfactorily with respect to the analysis of meal. This should enable the continuation of investigations into the utility of online analysis of hot products. With respect to the analysis of precrushed material, a system is proposed enabling direct analysis on belt conveyors but the construction of such an analyser would require about 2 years.
