Obiettivo
The objectives of the project and the methodology followed
are:
1. To measure the subsurface bubble concentration and size spectrum under varying conditions of wind and sea, and
varying positions with respect to breaking wave and
Langmuir circulation patterns. Total bubble cross-section
will be measured acoustically, while the concentration
and size distributions will be measured optically near
the sea surface.
2. To measure total gas saturation, oxygen saturation, and the thermal structure of the surface layers of the sea
for periods of several weeks. These observations should
demonstrate and quantify the ability of bubbles to pump
gas into the surface ocean. Models of this process will
be tested and improved.
3. To simulate the downwelling associated with Langmuir
circulation in a laboratory facility and to investigate
the influence of this downwelling on the behaviour of
bubbles released near the surface; in particular their
effect on gas saturation and particle concentration in
the water will be measured.
Numerical models of these effects will be tested and
developed.
4. To measure the distribution and flux of atmospheric sea salt particles near the sea surface in various wind and
wave conditions. These measurements will be coincident
with optical measurements of the near-surface bubble
distribution and will be integrated with acoustic
measurements of bubble distributions at greater depths.
