Long range acoustic communications

Obiettivo

The main objective of the project is to design, build and check a prototype of a high performance underwater acoustic communication system capable of operatin at ranges up to 100 km in deep waters, for environment control and oceanographi survey applications, as an alternative to systems using radio link satellite transmission.

The project is built around three lines:

- Medium modelling
- Signal processing
- Experiments in the western Mediterranean Sea.

Several signal coding techniques will be investigated and their performances accessed by use of models of the acoustic channel. Particular emphasis will be put on the necessity to minimize the energy per bit for reliable transmission. Due to the limited energy available and the fact that the considered systems ar supposed to work for long periods of time, signal to noise ratio is expected to be low; furthermore, due to long ranges involved, the propagation channel will have large time spread and fluctuations. Therefore, novel promising techniques like dual link transmission allowing feedback from the receiver to the transmitter for optimization of data coding depending of the channel characteristics will be considered.

Predictions of channel time and frequency spreading as well as background noise will be achieved by modelling, particular attention will be given to coupling physical models of the ocean to acoustic propagation models; these computer models could be considered as a set of tools and could be made available for instrument designers.

Two experiments are scheduled: the first one at the beginning of the project in order to get a good feeling of the various problems to be faced and the second one after the optimal system is designed and realized in order to validate the concepts.
