Sediment Transport Modelling in Marine Coastal Environments

Obiettivo

The quantification of sand transport rates in the marine coastal environment is a key element in the prediction of sea bed changes, coastline evolution and the morphological impact of human interference, such as beach nourishment and other coastal protection schemes. Large gaps still remain in our present knowledge of sediment transport processes, and a continuing need exists for an improvement in our understanding leading ultimately to reliable, well-validated, practical modelling systems.
The main objectives of the project are therefore:
- To increase knowledge of the physical processes involved in the transport of non-cohesive sediment (sand) under the influence of waves and currents; - To develop improved predictive mathematical models for the quantitative description of sediment transport processes; and
- To deliver simplified sand transport models for use in coastal engineering practice.
The research will be concentrated on three main topics: A. Near-bed sediment transport processes; B.
Suspended load processes; and C. Engineering sand transport formulations. Topics A and B will be concerned with sediment transport by waves and currents in both the sheet flow and rippled bed regimes, including the effects of sediment size gradation, of bed slope, and of various fluid-sediment-bedform interactions. These topics will be studied through a combination of innovative experimental work in the laboratory and mathematical model development. Topic C will involve the application of the results of these sophisticated research models in real life situations, and the development of practical integrated sand transport models for use by the coastal engineering community. The scientific team in SEDMOC comprises researchers from four leading research institutes and nine universities. The team has an established strength and a balanced composition, linking expertise in basic physical processes (experimental and theoretical research) to that in coastal engineering applications.
The research topics will be tackled by three working groups which will act as cross-topic working units, namely (1) Data and experimental research, (2) Research model development, and (3) Engineering sand transport models. The main deliverable of the project will be a reference document on sediment transport modelling in the marine coastal environment, containing: basic processes of sediment transport, modelling concepts, ranges of applicability and methods of model implementation in real life situations. Moreover, a well documented database, (joint) journal papers and scientific background reports will be delivered.
Dissemination and exchange of knowledge will be stimulated through the organization of open workshops.
