Development of Reference Materials for Paralytic Shellfish Poisons

The report describes the preparation of two lyophilized mussel reference materials and the certification of the mass fractions of saxitoxin and dc-saxitoxin in these materials. Saxitoxin and dc-saxitoxin belong to the group of the Paralytic Shellfish Poisons (PSP). In addition information is given about the preparation of a saxitoxin enrichment solution (CRM 663) to be used with the blank reference material (CRM 543) so as to obtain a reference material positive for saxitoxin. The certification study for CRM 542 and CRM 543 was carried out by 13 laboratories using a variety of HPLC methods involving precolumn or postcolumn derivatization
