General Information : The project aims at the preparation of artificial groundwater candidate reference materials corresponding to two levels of concentration of major elements (high and low) of typical and sandstone media. The major elements, compounds and parameters proposed to be certified in the candidate reference materials correspond to those most commonly determined by EC laboratories for the control of EC Directives on groundwater: Na, K, Ca, Mg, C1, SO4, NO3, pH, Fe, Mn, NH4 and PO4, at concentrations representative of those most often encountered in EC groundwaters, and in the range of values given by the EC Directives. The project covers the following tasks: - feasibility study for the preparation of the candidate reference materials (effects of irradiation); - preparation of the candidate reference materials involving g-irradiation and ampouling; - homogeneity and stability studies; - organization of the certification campaign of Na, K, Ca, Mg, C1, SO4, NO3, pH, Fe, Mn, NH4 and PO4 contents; - technical and statistical evaluation of the data and writing of the certification report. The feasibility study was concluded in 1995 and enabled to Optimize the composition of the candidate CRMs and the stabilization procedure. The materials were successfully analyzed in 1997 and subsequently certified. Both CRMs (616 and 617) are now available at the IRMM.
