VOCATIONAL TRAINING SOFTWARE AND TOOLS TO ASSIST INTELLECTUAL AUTHORS AND SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS IN THE PRODUCTION OF MULTIMEDIA

Exploitable results

The project, under the acronym EASI-ISAE, has the central aim to inform, direct and optimise the process whereby intellectual authors, teachers, and software developers combine in the production of excellence in Multimedia teaching and learning material. Between February 1998 and April 2000, the consortium developed products and services in three areas. First, EASI (Educating Authors for Simulated Interaction), provides World Wide Web (WWW)-based education and training material, with downloadable Multimedia packages as demonstrators, that will enable teachers as intellectual authors to prepare intellectual material and resources for transfer to Multimedia teaching and learning formats, fully meeting their pedagogical imperatives. As a mirror activity, ISAE (Intercommunication Software for Appreciating Educators) provides education and training material to prepare software developers to facilitate teachers in this process and to author in a more pedagogically effective manner. Second the EASI-ISAE Matching Facility uses an on-line system, to match intellectual authors and software developers for their preferences in the development of Multimedia packages. Matching is done on the basis of language spoken, target language, target platform, experience of subject area, target age range, and whether the developer has produced similar material. There is the capacity for Companies to search for potential intellectual authors based on subjects taught, teaching experience, age range taught and experience of developing for electronic media. Third, to demonstrate and provide feedback on the process examples of Multimedia with comments by intellectual authors and software developers are provided. Many of these can be downloaded from the WWW or are available on Compact Disk. At the simplest level the EASI-ISAE project is designed to bridge the co-operation and communication gap that is currently responsible for so much ineffective technology-based learning. At its most sophisticated, the combined three parts, it will provide an on-line service to education and to industry, for on-going training and development, and pro-actively bringing together intellectual authors and technical authors. The result will be a healthier, more competitive Multimedia industry and much improved awareness in education of the power of multimedia for learning, and knowledge of how to access it. The future commercial viability is based on extending the education and training material to augment short courses. Each of five contractors; Mediaconcept (Citicom) in France, Balear De Desarrollo Y Formación, SL, in Palma de Majorca, IAPETOS SA technology consultants in Athens Greece, Uppsala University in Uppsala Sweden and High Peak College Services Ltd in Derby, England have developed language and culturally dedicated learning material. The Matching Facility will be a ‘free’ service provided by the University of Derby.e device h
