Obiettivo VERY LARGE QUANTITIES OF BEECH, AND SPECIALLY IN RELATIVELY SMALL DIAMETERS OF ABOUT 30 CM ARE AVAILABLE IN EEC COUNTRIES AND THESE AT VERY LOW PRICES. NOTWITHSTANDING ITS GOOD MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, BEECH IS NO LONGER USED IN EXTERIOR APPLICATIONS (I.E.EXTERIOR JOINERY, EQUIPMENT FOR PARKS, SPORTS ETC, AND IN GENERAL ALL KINDS OF OUTDOOR USES). THIS REDUCED USE OF BEECH IS DUE TO ITS POOR BEHAVIOUR UNDER HUMIDITY FLUCTUATIONS, ALSO AGAINST FUNGI AND INSECTS, AND FURTHER BY THE CARE AND TREATMENT NEEDED TO MAINTAIN ITS LOOK. THEY ALSO ARE THE REASONS WHY BEECH HAS BEEN DRIVEN OUT BY EXPENSIVE TROPICAL WOOD SPECIES IN THE PROCESSING INDUSTRY. THE RESEARCH-WORK CAN BE SPLIT UP INTO SEVERAL PARTS AS FOLLOWS(ALTHOUGH NOT NECESSARILY IN THE SAME SEQUENCE: 1. SAWING AND/OR SLICING OF THE LAMINATIONS. BY THIS, IT IS ENVISAGED TO REVALUE THE BEECH OUT OF LOGS WITH SMALL DIAMETER (LAST THINNING). DEPENDING ON THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LOGS, SLICING OR MULTIPLE SAWING CAN BE APPLIED. ADVANTAGE OF SLICING (CUT WOOD) AVOIDS PLANING WHILE SAWN WOOD NEEDS IT. SELECTION OF THE COUTTING TECHNIQUE HAS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT FURTHER PROCESSING STEPS - STATIC OR NON-STOP-RUNNING PRESSING - TYPE OF THE GLUE (GAP-FILLING OR NOT) - COST EVALUATION OF THE RELATION WOOD VOLUME AGAINST GLUE QUANTITY. THE AIM OF THIS PART SHOULD TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION AN ANALYSIS OF ALL THE DATA RESULTING FROM THE OTHER PARTS. 2. IMPREGNATION. CAN BE REALISED : - DIRECTLY ON THE LOGS - ON THE LAMINATIONS - ON THE END PRODUCT. ONE SINGLE TREATMENT OF THE LOGS BY A COMBINED ACTION OF THE THREE IMPREGNATION SYSTEMS (FOR STABILITY, DURABILITY AND LOOK) WOULD BE THE "NEC PLUS ULTRA". SLICING AND GLUING WOULD BE DONE AFTERWARDS. THE TOTAL COST OF THE PROCESS WOULD BE MUCH REDUCED. THIS HYPOTHESIS DEPENDS ON A LOT OF CONSIDERATIONS SUCH AS INTERACTIONS OF THE IMPREGNATION SYSTEMS, COMPATIBILITY OF THE CHOSEN GLUE ... WHICH MUST BE INVESTIGATED STEP BY STEP. IF NO SIGNIFICANT RESULT CAN BE OBTAINED BY THIS GLOBAL APPROACH THERE EXISTS A LOT OF OTHER POSSIBILITIES SUCH AS THE IMPREGNATION OF THE LAMINATIONS BEFORE OR AFTER DRYING, BEFORE GLUING OR EVENTUALLY AFTER GLUING. FUNDAMENTAL POSSIBILITIES EXIST FOR THE TRANSFER OF THE PRODUCT INTO THE WOOD - SYSTEMS IN AQUEOUS SOLUTION - SYSTEMS IN COMBINED SOLUTION (WATER + ALCOHOL) - SYSTEMS IN ORGANIC SOLUTION (INSOLUBLE IN WATER). 3. GLUES AND GLUING. THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS ARE OF THE EXTERIOR TYPE FOR NON-LOAD BEARING COMPONENTS, SO THAT SEVERAL TYPES OF GLUES CAN BE APPLIED : - RESORCINOL (WITH OR WITHOUT TANIN) - POLYURETHANE - UREUM-FORMALDEHYDE REINFORCED WITH MELAMINE - REINFORCED PVA-C (WATER-RESISTANT). COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN IMPREGNATION SYSTEMS AND GLUE HAS TO BE INVESTIGATED IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE PROCESSING PARAMETERS NECESSARY TO A PERFORMANT GLUE-LINE.
