TO DEVELOP GENERALISED MATHEMATICAL MODELS TO CORRELATE AND PREDICT THE STATIC LEACHING BEHAVIOUR OF COMPLEX ORES GIVEN AN INPUT OF DATA FROM SCALE EXPERIMENTAL LEACHING TESTS OR IDEALLY MINERALOGICAL DATA ALONE.
THE MATHEMATICAL MODELS EXAMINED IN PHASE 1 TO CORRELATE WSL OBTAINED DATA ON THE STATIC LEACHING OF THE COMPLEX CU, ZN SULPHIDE ORE AT AVOCA WILL BE IMPROVED AND/OR NEW MODELS DEVELOPED TO INCORPORATE THE DISSOLUTION OF IRON MINERALS, DIFFUSE REACTION FRONTS, COMPETITIVE DISSOLUTION OF VARIOUS MINERALS ANISOTROPIC ORE STRUCTURE AND CHANNELLING/WETTING PHENOMENA. THE IMPROVED MODELS WILL BE EVALUATED INITIALLY USING LEACHING DATA OBTAINED BY THE BUREAU DE RECHERCHES GEOLOGIQUES ET MINIERES, FRANCE, IN PHASE 1 AND SUBSEQUENTLY USING ADDITIONAL PERCOLATION AND SUBMERGED LEACHING DATA ON AVOCA ORE OBTAINED BY WSL DURING THIS PHASE 2 STUDY. PREDICTIONS FOR THE IN-SITU EXPERIMENT BEING CARRIED OUT BY THE INDUSTRIAL INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH AND STANDARDS, IRELAND, WILL BE MADE.
IN ORDER TO EXAMINE THE RANGE OF STRUCTURE FOR WHICH THE MODELS DEVELOPED COULD BE RELEVANT BEYOND THE SINGLE PARTICULAR EXAMPLE OF THE COMPLEX AVOCA ORE, A RANGE OF SYNTHETIC ORES WILL BE MANUFACTURED AND LEACHED AND LEACHING DATA ON OTHER ORES EVALUATED. THESE LEACHING DATA WILL PROVIDE VALUABLE FEED BACK WHICH WILL ASSIT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE MODELS, ENABLE THEIR MORE GENERAL APPLICABILITY TO BE ASSESSED AND ASSIST IN CORRELATING MODEL PARAMETERS WITH MINERALOGICAL STRUCTURE. THE MODELLING OF THE FLOW OF LIQUOR AND AIR THROUGH ORE BEDS DURING STATIC LEACHING AND THE COMBINING OF SUCH MODELS WITH THE LEACHING MODEL WILL ALSO BE EXAMINED.
