Obiettivo
The aim of the MAESTRO project is to accomplish a marine information system to support offshore operations in the field of oil and gas exploration and production. The supply of accurate and up to date marine and environmental data and forecasts will increase safety, minimize the environmental risks and improve economics of the operation. A demonstration at the offshore site will show the potential users the operational applications and benefits of the system.L%
The MAESTRO project has resulted in an operational real time wind and wave data monitoring and forecasting system using real time wave and wind measurements, operational computer modelling and remote sensing data. The users, both onshore and offshore, can receive actual information on their PC via telecom.
More accurate and real time information and forecast of the sea state (wind, waves) enables the user of the MAESTRO system to anticipate the consequences of the sea conditions. Environmental forces can be reduced, movements can be minimized and the weather window can be optimized. Safety levels can be indicated more precisely, behaviour of floating and fixed structures can be better predicted and anchor patterns of workships can be adjusted, consequences of calamities can be judged immediately and adequate measures can be taken, insurance costs can be reduced etc.
APPROACH
Data from the ERS-1 satellite, the monitoring network North Sea and the Seawatch measuring buoy stations(s) is gathered by the shore based station. In this station operational models for wind and waves make forecats using special facilities to assimilate the mentioned data. A comprehensive set of real time measured data and forecasted data is sent through a satellite link to the MAESTRO station at the offshore site. There it is presented and can be selected to deliver dedicated information to the operations manager.
INNOVATION
Currently environmental data is supplied by the national meteorological offices using meteo measurements in combination with computer models for wind and waves. The MAESTRO project incorporates real time wave measurements by buoy stations and satellites in this approach. Moreover it aims to realize a real time information link with the presentation-station at the offshore site, giving the operations managers easy access to a complete set of data andforecasts to optimize planning and execution of the work.
ECONOMICS
The total project costs are estimated at 2,2 million Hfl (1013kECU). Depending on the type of offshore operations all-in costs are 50.000-500.000 Hfl per day. A conservative estimate for the increase of effectiveness of these activities, when the MAESTRO system is used, is 20%. The break even point will depend on the sort of operation and the daily costs involved. Assuming mean daily costs of 200.000 Hfl, the project costs will be earned back after some 120 operational MEASTRO days. The number of systems will surely not be limited to one. This will further shorten the pay-off time.
