INTEGRATED AUTOMATION FOR A NEW GENERATION JACK-UP

Obiettivo

The aim of the project is to assemble and demonstrate the feasibility of an integrated system, concentrating on the mud system.
The system will integrate recent developments to produce an overall system which offers the unique combination of the characteristics of safety, environmental acceptability, efficiency, economics, operability and ergonomics.
The key sub-components are :
- Mud System
- Integrated Instrumentation & Control with the possible addition of
- Tubular handling (in/out of the hole & to/from deck and drill floor) subject to the availability of results from the RA-D tests in Aberdeen.
The approach has been to consider the functions required on the rig, how to best integrate them and how a jackup may be built around them.
Significant HSE benefits : Personnel removed from hazrdous areas; avoidance of contact with chemicals; reduced manual handling; equipment automatically shut down in the event of failure, limits consequence of failure; manpower released for critical maintenance and equipment optimisation. Reduced chemical usage (10-20%). Overall reduction in mud usage observed on comparable hole sections.
Controlled, mechanised addition of powder resulted in improved quality of mixing, reduced manpower required for mixing and reduced amount of chemical needed to achieve specified mud properties.
Continuous monitoring of mud properties led to better overall management and control of the mud system, allowed early detection of downhole problems and improved use of solids control equipment.
Online availability of real time information was seen as a major advantage by all rig management personnel.
A data acquisition and monitoring system will be used, linking processes together and providing the appropriate information to the driller and other key rig personnel for monitoring and control of the system. The automated system will reduce the number of men exposed to danger on the drill floor giving the driller more time to concentrate on optimising the drilling of the well. It will be important to consider the ergonomic display of data, too much can be confusing. Information appropriate to the current activities should be most prominent with other data for monitoring only.
The mud system is central to the drilling operations. Mud is used to control the formation fluids, ensure a stable borehole and carry the drilled solids to the surface. It is a complex mixture of many materials. Barite gives the correct weight to prevent an influx of formation fluids. Polymers and other additives control the interaction with shale and preserve the borehole shape. The rheology must be maintained to give a gel strength so that when pumping stops, to add a stand of pipe, the cuttings produced by drilling do not fall back. While pumping, the viscosity must be sufficient to carry the drilled solids to the surface but not too large to result in high surface pressures. An understanding of the mud system and the addition of the appropriate monitoring techniques will result in significantly improved efficiency, earlier problem detection and better mud control.
In an almost closed loop system, where treated mud is returned to the hole, it is important to monitor the mud condition and condition it accordingly. Drilled solids are removed by the shakers and other equipment. Barite lost in these operations must be made up. The rheology may have been affected by chemical interactions and must be monitored and any problems corrected. The operation of the treatment system must be monitored to maintain optimum performance. The mud engineer is currently responsible for this job and hasat his disposal a limited number of measurements and generally many years of experience. By adding new instrumentation we will improve our monitoring of the system and add the human experience into the automated system.
The handling of tubular goods has been studied by a number of companies, most recently by Strachan and Henshaw with the RA-D project. If the proof of concept rig is successful we have the option to take their design and the experience gained to determine the modifications required for use on a jackup.
The new generation jackup will benefit from the automated systems proposed and offer many new features from bulk chemical to tubular handling.
