3D MODELLING CHAIN FOR RESERVOIR ENGINEERING

Obiettivo

The aim is to show the importance and value of using a 3D MODELLING CHAIN of existing 3D software in Exploration and Production to construct a generic Earth-Model for reservoir engineering shared and checked by experts from different domains (geophysics, geology and reservoir engineering) and the importance of feedback between disciplines to maintain consistency during an Earth model's life cycle.
Furthermore we intend to implement P.O.S.C standards to ensure software interoperability and the use of the P.O.S.C compliant data base for data communication and storage.
This demonstration is based on a comparison between this new methodology and a conventional approach on a actual study.L%
The four phases of the project have been done. In all phases, the objectives have been reached and the results in terms of quality improvement and time savings have come up to expectations.
The project has lead to the definition of a new way to work in the GeoScience domain, and it has enriched the design of new generation software in both companies.
It has also allowed a significant improvement of teams productivity. The origin of this efficiency improvement is the high level of consistency between the different models (structural, stratigraphic, reservoir) and the data integration.
Time has been saved :
- During the data transfer, which is one of the most time-consuming operation in a standard study.
- At the beginning of each step, during the data control which was simplified. When updating the models, using macro-command facilities.
Significant innovations have been designed and implemented in different domains, in particular Methodology and Data integration. New kind of results, specific to the full 3D approach, have been obtained at each step. For example :
- New structural maps including horizon and faults contouring.
- Uncertainties evaluation at the different steps, made possible by the efficiency and simplicity of the models update, which allow several tests.
PHASE 1 : Data conditioning and Data input in a P.O.S.C compliant Data Base.
The aim is to help geophysicists and geologists construct the 3D boundary of the earth-model from 1-D, 2-D, 3-D interpretations with conventional tools. This "boundary" model integrates different interpretations and ensures their geometrical consistency. We obtain a surface model which defines geological layers by their boundaries (top, bottom and discontinuities).
PHASE 3 : Stratigraphic Modelling
The aim is to help sedimentologists define, with more accuracy, the depositional mode and the contents of interesting sedimentary bodies between the layer's boundaries. The geologist can use his geostatistical tools with quantified values of petrophysical properties to fill up inside these boundaries. We obtain a volumetric earth model.
PHASE 4 : Dynamic modelling
The aim is to help the reservoir engineer build an initial reservoir description based on the generic earth model geometry and mesh it for simulation objectives. We should therefore obtain a dynamic description of the reservoir. The initial model description can be modified to ensure the coherency between simulation results and production data.
PHASE 5 : Feedback test, evaluation and report.
