OPTIMISATION OF THE DESIGN OF VANE TYPE HYDRAULIC DRILL MOTORS

Obiettivo

1. Optimise the design of vane type hydraulic drill motors, by computer models, endurance tests and field tests. The latest advancement of which is the MacDrill motor.
2. Demonstrate the theoretical and technical qualities, and economic viability, of the equipment.
3. Establish its operational parameters and performance capacity for use in high temperature and high corrosive environments, and in high mud densities.
EC THERMIE Project N°OG/00185/94/UK set and has crystallised, a new industry standard in rigid vane downhole drilling motor technology. The MacDrill has been run successfully on : dry nitrogen gas, natural gas with a high distillate content, gasoil (a rubber attacking cutting solvent), acidising solutions and inhibitors (plus rubber degrading pacifers), naphtha, brine water and fresh water. The ability to operate in high temperature wells for extended periods, running consecutively on different drive fluids e.g. liquid to gas to spotting acid, all in one motor in a single run, provides significant operational flexibility and leads to large savings in time and money.
The rotation of the rotor in the MacDrill describes a perfectly balanced circular movement with no whipping action, thus obviating the need for a universal joint. This greatly reduces vibration and bit chatter, increasing milling efficiency and reducing wear on other downhole tools. Mechanical motor noise levels are far below those of conventional motors, improving measurement-while-drilling (MWD) signal to noise ratios.
The short lenght of the motor facilitates faster 'rig-up' time, requires less additional rrisers and can obviate the need for a lubricator in coiled tubing applications; It also enables the motor to negociate tight radius curves and severe doglegs that conventional motors simply could not negociate and allows positioning of instrumentation and telemetry equipment closer to the bit, thus increasing directional drilling accuracy.
The MacDrill is an ideally motor for Under Balanced Drilling (UBD) applications. The motor will not overspeed or suffer from decompression problems and has proven tolerance under pressure to 100% nitrogen.
INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
The MacDrill motor complements the develoment of new coiled tubing well technologies for increasing recoverable reserves from mature fields and reducing the drilling cost/marginality of new fields. These new well technologies include Multilateral Wells, Extended reach Drilling, slim Hole drilling, Coiled Tubing (Intervention and Completions), Hydraulic Workover, Intelligent completions and Underbalanced Drilling.
For these new technology wells a short hydraulic downhole drilling motor of all metal construction like the MacDrill is both an innovative and enabling technology to the extent that it is capble of :
1. high temperature underbalanced drilling, completion and workover in bottom hole temperatures up to 600F
2. irrigation by agressive drive fluids, dry gases and multiphase propellants e.g. dry N2 gas/water mix.
3. Delivery of accurate, short radius of curvature multilateral well paths with minimum MWD/LWD noise interference and lower rig-up height.
The MacDrill motor thus offers prospective end-users low switching costs, high value relative to price and high relative value to price substitution efficiency when compared too it's nearest turbodrill and Moineau PDM's competition wich have been used in the oil and gas industry for over half a century.
ECONOMIC ASPECTS
As a complement to coiled tubing, the MacDrill motor reduces underbalanced drilling, completion and workover costs safely with lower environmental impact. The MacDrill has higher operating t? rating relative to it's turbodrill product competition and for high t? and underbalanced applications offers lower cost of ownership; lower operating cost, higher in-field serviceability, shorter rig-up time, higher torque relative to overall length, and greater downhole mission endurance.
The motor's enables coiled tubing units to be used instead.
