DIVERLESS SEALINE REPAIR SYSTEM

Obiettivo

Aim of the project is to give a reliable and effective solution, not available at present, for repairing a damaged sealine at any existing water depth (at least 600 mt. w.d.) ensuring reliability of strategic installation like the sealines which, with the existing technology, can be repaired only in relatively shallow water depth.
The project is the conclusion of a technological innovative effort of testing at sea of the basic components on a dummy line, laid in 300 metres w.d. is finalized to an industrial solution to the problem of repair at any water depth.
The proposed project will reduce the risks by means of robotics and increase the environmental protection contributing to the extension of working life and to the reliability of subsea structures.
Applicable. DSRS System is able to intervent onto a damaged pipeline layed in deepwater (down to 1,000 water depth) in order to carry out the main tasks of the repair (handling & lifting of the pipe, cutting, machining, cleaning and alignment). With reference to the sealing capability of the X-loc connector has been reached halfway of the expected value (ref. pressure is 207 bar) but the hydraulic testing has been carried out at the worst operational conditions for the X-loc rings; so SAIPEM is evaluating to perform later July '97 a hydraulic test of ths spool pressurizing it by installation of end caps.
Spool Piece handling (22 tons) and installation have been carried out successfully in four different configurations:
* from perfect alignment with pipe ends to the worst max misalignment of the pipe ends/remote locking swiwels;
It is important to remark that D.S.R.S. is a very flexible system; this peculiarity allows itself to be able to install various kinds of connectors for a wide range of pipes (16" - 32").
1) INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY
The most innovatory parts of the project, which in terms of feasibility has been basically proved in sea trials on November 1992, is the improvement and finalization of the already tested technologies and related components integrated with ROV's, eliminating the use of divers who cannot operate at the water depth where some existing sealines and certainly more in the future are operating, thus increasing safety, reliability and working life of the subsea installation. The innovative concept is the "low force" approach, that is all the operations are carried out by ROV's, by subdividing in a proper sequence the tasks, and designing the equipment needed in a way so that each of them can be managed by ROV's deployed by an existing medium class D.S. Vessels. Once the damaged portion of a sealine has been properly located the equipment and procedures must be finalized, including all the contingency and back up systems, to carry out the following using ROV's andan existing medium class diving vessel.
2) CONTEXT IN WHICH THE TECHNOLOGY IS OPERATING :
- proper mapping of the damages pipe environment;
- elevation of pipeline from the seabed;
- cut and removal of damaged section;
- manipulation of the two ends of the pipeline (to ensure alignment);
- removal of the coating and pipe end preparation;
- installation of the spool piece(s) and activation of the mechanical connector;
- lowering of the pipeline to seabed and pressure testing;
3) ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF THE TECHNOLOGY :
Replacing heavy lift vessel and divers in risky underwater activities will result in both human life and cost saving. Moreover the system will contribute to the extension of working like of subsea structures. The cost of this system is in the region of 10-15% of the costs presently incurred in repairing a damaged sealine, beyond the reach of divers. The replication of the project is in the region of the 40% of the total cost of this project.
