The problem to be addressed is the difficulty of dealing safely, economically and in an environmentally friendly way with putrescent waste. A new concept in composting is a possible solution. This would allow a large reduction in the amount of organic waste, which is currently placed in landfill sites or incinerated while satisfying a growing market for fertilizer alternative and other inputs forth-organic food sector. Research on the new composting concept is required to devise the most suitable composting methods, to design the specialist equipment and to specify appropriate management systems. Prototype compost products will be tested and subject to consumer acceptance trials. The anticipated deliverable will be a composting system for putrescent wastes which provides composted products suitable for a defined range of markets
