The role of mature male parr for brown Trout populations

Ziel

I aim in the proposed project to study how mature male parr effect brown trout populations. This will be done in two steps, where the first step investigates how mature parr are genetically related and if they aggregate into groups. This is done both in the spring (May- June) and just prior to spawning.

Aggregations of mature parr into groups can if the intra-group relatedness is higher than the inter- group relatedness facilitate kin- selection in form of reduced aggressiveness among group members and less fierce competition. It is also interesting to see if groups are found throughout the summer or if they appear prior to spawning when competition for matings should be fierce.

The second step would be to study what role mature male parr have at spawning both for polyandry and for maintaining high genetic variation within the populations. These two steps would be studied by sampling a number streams with varying proportions of mature parr. As well as sampling fertilised eggs from a number of redds.
