Obiettivo
The project in the past has helped in the definition of the ATM concept and continues to study the related protocols. In particular the project is interested in the pre-normative aspects of:
- signalling in the B-ISDN, and
- connectionless services in the B-ISDN.
The objectives of this work are to contribute to standards and consensus forming in bodies such as CCITT, ETSI, STGs and ATM Requirements Group, and to provide input to the technology related work in R1012.
A detailed study has been made of the asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) layer protocol with particular attention given to ATM header functionalities. Compromise proposals were put forward in order to align the European and American positions (at the time of the likely solution).
An ATM signalling concept has also been studied and views on this urgent matter have been given the Research and development in Advanced Communications technologies in Europe programme (RACE) and standardization meetings such as European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and International Consultative Telegraph and Telephone Committee (CCITT). A protocol reference model has been developed which defines an ATM subnetwork in order to harmonize (ISDN) and (OSI) models.
Connectionless services have been studied by looking at the key connectionless networks in use today including local area networks (LAN) and metropolitan area networks (MAN). Protocol, service and evolution issues have been addressed.
Technical Approach
The technical approach is to:
- assess information previously gained within the project
- assess information from external bodies, and
- consider the present status of standardisation
in order to reach, as far as possible, the most appropriate solution. This work is then fed back to the standardisation bodies for their consideration.
Work in the area of signalling is considering both long and short term solutions. The work in the area of connectionless services is considering the future public service offered in an environment where LANs and MANs are widely used and accepted.

Achievements
The project has studied the ATM layer protocol in detail, particularly ATM header functionalities, and put forward compromise proposals trying to align the European and USA positions (at the time of the 'likely solution').

Expected Impact
relevant RACE projects such as 1044 and R1045, and to the ATM Requirements Group. The results of the work will also be fed into the RACE STGs to further the common functional specifications. Significant contributions have already been made to both ETSI and CCITT.
