Distributed Documenting Services

Obiettivo

DIDOS is aimed at publishing and manufacturing industries in the domain of technical documentation. It realises, demonstrates, tests and evaluates applications using the distributed service centre concept for advanced information processing, publishing and communication methods.
The research is a strategic project for the publishing and manufacturing industry focusing on the application domain of technical documentation. Its main objective is the realization, demonstration, test and evaluation of new applications resulting from the introduction of a distributed service centre which uses advanced information processing, publishing and communication methods.

Key issues in the research are:
distributed services in a service centre configuration;
service management of distributed services in an open network environment;
cooperative authoring and editing;
a document application design service for user oriented content composing of technical documentation;
distributed printing on demand supporting just in time;
distributed interactive production of multimedia technical documents.

Achievements include the definition of a common architecture used as a framework for all specification, development and integration tasks, and development of end user systems for documenting service providers and users by selecting complete stacks of protocols, software, hardware and supporting services.

The DIDOS reference platform supports users in their application of the DIDOS service centre concept and its services.

Three applications addressed needs of industrial companies for advanced production of technical documentation, distributed printing on demand of technical documentation, and generation of multimedia technical documentation.
The pilots were evaluated in technical, organizational and economic terms.

Three business cases were described providing a framework for introducing and operating a business for new service providers, service centre cooperation and customers using external technical documentation services across networks.
Technical Approach

DIDOS applications should enable the industry to produce more, better and new types of documentation. An open network of distributed documenting services is established on an IBC platform. Three experiments have demonstrated the use of such services by industrial users, by integrating documenting services with existing publishing facilities, and also with engineering and manufacturing information processing systems.

The project proceeded as follows:

- Reference and architecture model definition to represent all user related matters in technical documentation.
- Test and demonstration of the feasibility of distributed documenting services in a service centre configuration for customers in the technical documentation domain.
- Verification of concepts and standards for distributed service management and planning, and user access for documenting services and their extension to multimedia.
- Evaluation of integrated concepts (just-in-time) for time saving, flexible and economic document production.

Expected Impact

Distributed documenting services have been demonstrated as an appropriate way to produce technical documentation in a European environment. Consideration of requirements from both engineering/manufacturing and publishing points of view and the production and distribution process for technical documentation has led to a sound understanding of common requirements and to integrated concepts and applications.
