Multiplexed Network for Distributive and Interactive Services

Obiettivo

The main objective of MUNDI is to develop key WDM components and to construct demonstrators using WDM technology.

MUNDI will explore potential cost savings and performance benefits derivable from wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology. Moderate and higher density WDM will be demonstrated for distributive and interactive service provision and a systems-based evolution plan for wavelength managed optical networks will be produced.
The main objective of the research was to develop key wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) components and to construct demonstrators using WDM technology. The research also aimed to explore potential cost savings and performance benefits derivable from WDM technology, to demonstrate moderate and higher density WDM for distributive and interactive service provision and to produce a systems based evolution plan for wavelength managed optical networks.

The research has resulted in the following achievements:
an evolution plan compatible with early passive optical network (PON) structures has been developed, supporting a cost effective evolution strategy for optical access networks;
a specific approach to system modelling has been elaborated;
a detailed system plan has been established;
fibre pigtailed distributed feedback (DFB) laser modules of precise wavelength have been fabricated for the distributive demonstrator;
a prototype of a tuneable receiver has been assembled;
test structures for different demultiplexers and a multiwavelength source have been fabricated and characterized.
Technical Approach

WDM supports the development from current PON and active node concepts towards a multi-service network in an evolutionary manner, with minimal disruption to existing services as upgrades are added. Two main demonstrator activities are carried out: one based on a moderate density WDM (2nm) for distributive systems (digital multi-channel TV) and the second based on higher density WDM (1nm) for interactive service provision. Compatibility and interworking of the demonstrator sub-systems is intrinsic to the demonstrator specifications, as a future network is likely to include elements of both. This issue is being studied in a final common demonstrator based on the two approaches. Additionally, the feasibility of nodes using wavelength conversion and wavelength re-configurable gateways (add/drop multiplexers) is being demonstrated.

Concerning key WDM-key components, MUNDI develops precision wavelength lasers and laser arrays with the capability of individual wavelength adjustment. Other key components being developed are WDM multiplexers in ion exchange in glass technology, WDM demultiplexers in SiO2/Si and III/V technology, gateable multi-channel wavelength filters and wavelength converters with saturable absorbers. Optical receiver front ends are realised as photo-diode arrays and photo-diode pre-amplifier OEIC arrays. For interactive service applications, a tuneable transmitter/receiver device is being studied.

Key Issues

- Potential cost savings and performance benefits of WDM technology
- Demonstrating how moderate / higher density WDM supports distributive and interactive services
- A systems-based evolution plan for wavelength managed optical networks
- Technologies for fabrication of key WDM components

Expected Impact

MUNDI will have impact on WDM system evolution and related component development.
