BULK PRODUCTION OF PARTICLES BY ATOMISATION: STUDY OF DROP INTERACTIONS, SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS AND SPRAY STRUCTURES WITH LASER TECHNIQUES

Obiettivo

Research has resulted in the development of a probe using optical fibres and the Malvern 2600 system. The system can be used in hot dusty environments and needs only 1 optical access.
The fibre optic Malvern probe has 3 principal novel characteristics:
fibre optic input and output;
folded beam arrangement requiring only 1 optical access part;
air purge and cooling.

The main aim of the research was to develop a computational model of the spray drying process (exploiting fully recent advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD)) and to validate it by comparing its predictions was measurements made in a wide range of dryers. Special instruments were required for measurements on full scale dryers. The flow modelling programme was based on the computational fluid dynamics code FLOW3D (Release 2) which was used to model the gas flow within the spray dryers. Measurements were made using diffractometers to give particle size distributions of nonspherical particles and laser Doppler anemometers to give droplet velocity distribution, size distribution, and flux.

The main conclusions of the research are as follows:
the model is capable of simulating dryer operation with a reasonable degree of accuracy;
detailed predictions of gas conditions and droplet behaviour are possible;
axisymmetric simulation is adequate in many cases even though the chamber may not have full axial symmetry;
spatially resolved measurements inside full scale production dryers under operational conditions are possible using specially adapted instruments.

Spray drying is an important industrial drying process, used where it is necessary to convert a liquid feedstock to a solid product in a single step. Best operating procedures are usually obtained by empirical laboratory and pilot plant experiments. Changes resulting from such procedures are generally incremental. The main objective of the programme has been the development and validation of a computer code to model spray dryers. A successful code will reduce some of the empiricism involved in the technology, and consequently help to reduce the risks involved in introducing more radical changes to operating procedures.

The main features of the model were examined andspecial instruments were used to make validating measurements. Comparisons of model predictions and measurements were made for wide ranges of dryers and feedstocks. It is concluded that the model gives good enough agreement to give potential users confidence in its potential as a predictive tool.
THIS PROJECT IS A STUDY OF SPRAY ATOMISATION SYSTEMS WITH THE OBJECTIVES OF DEVELOPING COMPUTATIONAL MODELS OF THE SPRAY DRYER PROCESS AND VALIDATING THESE MODELS WITH LASER BASED MEASUREMENTS.
