COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING SYSTEM FOR THE MEAT PROCESSING INDUSTRY

Obiettivo


The following methods/tools have been developed, all generally applicable within the meat processing domain:
a generic concept of a computer integrated manufacture (CIM) system;
a project model for implementation of CIM systems;
a tool for analysis and specification of CIM systems;
a cell controller core including flexible planning and scheduling functions (interactive manipulation of graphical Gantt chart is possible) using UNIX, C++, ORACLE and XVIEW as implementation platform;
modelling and simulation tools;
a CIM target factory specification.

The generally applicable CIM know-how achieved will be used as a basis for new consulting services to the manufacturing industry. The CIM architecture, implementation model and tools will be used in future CIM projects thereby increasing efficiency and quality simultaneously with decreasing project life cost. The cell controller prototype will be used as a platform for implementation of future planning and scheduling systems and as a basis for developing new products. The modelling and simulation prototype will be used as a demonstrator and analysis tool in the initial phases of future implementation projects.
COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING, CIM, MUST BE SEEN AS A STRATEGIC MEANS FOR HANDLING CONFLICTING OBJECTIVES SUCH AS LOWER PRODUCTION COSTS, FASTER DELIVERY, CUSTOMIZATION OF PRODUCTS, HIGHER QUALITY, ETC.

HOWEVER, IMPLEMENTATION OF CIM IN A PARTICULAR ENTERPRISE IS TODAY AN ENORMOUS TASK. THUS INDUSTRY NEEDS CONCEPTS AND TOOLS FOR MAKING THE IMPLEMENTATION MORE EFFECTIVE AND CHEAPER. CONCEPTS AND MODULES FOR CIM ARE HIGHLY DOMAIN DEPENDENT, AND THE MEAT PROCESSING INDUSTRY IS SUCH AN INDUSTRY SEGMENT WHERE GENERIC CONCEPTS AND KEY SYSTEN FUNCTIONS CAN BE IDENTIFIED AND UTILIZED, AND WHERE CIM SYSTEMS ARE REQUIRED TO COPE WITH MARKET DEMANDS AND INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION.

MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MEAT PROCESSING INDUSTRY INCLUDE:- UNCERTAIN RAW MATERIAL SUPPLIES (DIFFERENT SLAUGHTERHOUSES, VARYING AMOUNTS, PRICES AND QUALITY, HIGHLY PERISHABLE, ETC.)
- LARGE SPECTRUM OF FINISHED GOODS (RELATED TO SPECIAL RECIPES, PRODUCT PACK-UP, ETC.)
- SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (HIGH LEVEL OF QUALITY DOCUMENTATION, VETERINARY CONTROL, ETC.)

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE PRESENT PROJECT ARE TO DEVELOP A GENERIC CIM CONCEPT AND ADDITIONAL METHODS WHICH WILL ENABLE AN EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF CIM SYSTEMS IN SPECIFIC FACTORIES, FOCUSING ESPECIALLY ON:

- HANDLING OF RECIPES AND BATCHES (JOBS).
- DYNAMIC PRODUCTION PLANNING, SCHEDULING AND CONTROL/MONITORING AT FACTORY FLOOR LEVEL.
- COORDINATION OF CELLS/PRODUCTION LINES.
- CONTROL AND MONITORING OF PHYSICAL PRODUCTION PROCESSES.
- LINKS TO (TYPICALLY EXISTING) ADMINISTRATIVE AND ORDER HANDLING/LONG TERM PLANNING SYSTEMS.

THE CIM CONCEPTS WILL BE DEVELOPED TO BE FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE TO THE EUROPEAN MEAT PROCESSING INDUSTRY. INDEPENDENT STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT BENEFITS OF MIN. 5% OF THE ADDED VALUE OUTPUT CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH IMPLEMENTATION OF CIM SYSTEMS IN THIS INDUSTRY.
