PHOTON AND NEUTRON SCATTERING STUDIES OF MAGNETIC MATERIALS

Obiettivo

The project is to understand magnetic properties of advanced materials on an atomic scale. Work will concentrate on experimental and theoretical studies of actinide compounds.
Most experimental work will take place on the diffraction facility on the wiggler beam line at the Daresbury synchroton. The key to the experimental work is the manipulation of the polarization of the X-ray beam, i.e. the extraction of circular polarization for the study of ferromagnets and the analysis of the diffracted beam polarization in the case of antiferromagnets. The Daresbury ring is currently the best worldwide for circular polarization studies in the hard X-ray regime. The actinide systems present a great challenge to theoreticians. Studies of the scattering cross-section, its polarization and energy dependence, as well as the study of specific systems to be measured, are included in the programme of work which will bring together experts working at Rutherford Appleton of Uppsala (Sweden) and ESRF (Grenoble).
