Obiettivo
A workstation environment ideally suited to the needs of mathematicians and users of mathematics has been developed. The central characteristic of this is an easy to use and now fully standard generalized markup language (SGML) based editor of documents which are both highly structured, and richly formatted. One of the main characteristics of the Euromath editor is that it represents mathematical formulae in a clearly structured cellular format, and at the same time allows the handling of mathematical expressions in a what you see is what you get (WYSIWYG) fashion. Insertion of mathematical expressions into a Euromath document is through a menu guided choice of maths structures from a palette, or alternatively through LaTeX string input, which provides the system with quite unique editing features. Moreover, the system does support calls of programs external to the Euromath system, providing an excellent basis for hypertext applications. This in turn requires the development of suitably powerful document type definitions. The Euromath project has also participated in standardization efforts aimed at creating a universally accepted document type definition (DTD) for mathematics.
The notion of DTD is extended to the modelling of processes external to the editor. From the earliest stages of its conception the project has included access to databases as an essential element of the proposed environment. It was decided to provide this by means of a separate database module, designed to have the look and feel of the Euromath, with cut and paste of documents via the shared X-Window environment. A second major component of the database interface is the provision of an onboard system for the building of a personalized full text database, selecting from remotely accessed material and making local additions. The resulting personal file system has been configured to mimic the STN-Messenger interface of the preferred remote online database: the MATH collection of the Fachinformationszentrum, Karlsruhe. Moreover, bit to bit compatibility has been achieved for all data and indexes held in personal computer (PC) or UNIX environments.
The user interface includes all activities designed to ensure that the Euromath system will meet the needs of, and be accessible to, the European mathematical community.
