A collaborative study of structure in the cosmic microwave background

Obiettivo

Structure in the angular distribution of the Cosmic Microwave Background is predicted on all cosmological theories of the origin of the Universe; this structure has subsequently evolved to form the galaxies and clusters around us. The search for this structure is a major goal of modern cosmological observation, and is attracting major effort internationally. In Europe, an NRALIAC collaboration has developed and operated a telescope system incorporating the highest sensitivity receivers which has set the lowest limits so far on degree scales.

The proposed collaboration will enable us to take this project forward to sensitivity levels a factor 3-5 times better than at present. This can only be achieved by making full and efficient use of state-of-the-art equipment operating full-time on a proven observing site. The work also requires the active collaboration of cosmologists in the interpretation of the data. We have been manpower limited up to the present. The support requested will ensure the success of this internationally competitive project. Further, the partnership will build on the research strengths of the three groups and at the same time will provide a transfer of state-of-the-art technology (radio frequency, digital, imaging, and computation) between the groups.
