PV POWERED FOG DETECTING AND WARNING SYSTEM FOR MOTORWAYS

Obiettivo

To demonstrate the suitability of PV to power a motorway fog warning system.
The plant is completely mounted and commissioned.
Fog detectors (with IR beams) are situated on a dangerous stretch of the A4 Milan-Venice motorway near Verona. Any change in the beam due to fog, smoke or heavy rain, is detected by the IR sensors. In this case six flash lights along the side of the road start blinking.
Two pv-racks, a batteries shelter and a switchboards shelter are mounted along with a meteorological pole, the fog detector unit (nefelometer) and the flash lamps on a service area along the super-highway.

Fog detectors and flash lights (12V) are fed through DC/DC converters (24 Vdc/12 Vdc). Fan (24 V dc) for room temperature conditioning. Monitoring : Analytical, storing 3 minute averages of data taken every 2 seconds :
Array and battery currents and voltages of all six subfields of system A.
Total array and battery currents and voltages of system B.
Total DC load currents of both batteries. In-plane irradiance, temperature, wind speed and direction (the latter sensors are mounted on a meteorological pole).
