Obiettivo
Aim of the project is to reduce by 50% the oil consumption for space heating in the telecommunication centre at Sifnos island.
Difficulties in transportation of oil to the island and thus a high cost should be noticed. In addition a contribution of the solar heating system to the reduction of air pollution is expected. Promotion of the introduction of PCs in similar will be tried.
The Apollonia telecommunication centre on the island of Sifnos has been constructed in such a way to meet completely thermal insulation terms, as defined by the Greek regulation (double walls with 8 cm glasswool, double windows etc.).
This construction contributes largely to reducing thermal losses.
Data collected during the monitoring phase led to some results.
- Very good insulation has been achieved in the building construction.
- The active solar heating system contributes for about 50% of total heat demand of the building.
- The utilization factor of the system is low due to the local climatic conditions and thus the economics of the project are not very attractive for replication.
The project concerns the design, construction-installation and monitoring of an active solar heating system for space heating and hot water for domestic needs of the Telecommunication Centre at the island of Sifnos. The building of approximately 2500 m3 is located at Apollonia. Efforts have been carried out in the architectural design of the building for the integration into the local architecture of the island. Same efforts have been made also in the design and construction of solar collectors field.
The plant consists of 61 flat solar collectors manufactured by CALPAK BP, Mark II with a total surface of 61x2=122 m2. The collectors are installed in a land beside the Northwest side of the building. The collectors are adjusted with a tilt angle of 45 degrees faced to the south. The supporting structures made by steel galvanised are mounted to the ground (a concrete basis).
The solar collectors have the following technical specifications (tests at JRC Ispra): FR=0,77 FRML=6,4 W/m2 deg. C. The heat storage consists of two steel made tanks (DIN 4802) with a total capacity of 9000l. The tanks are insulated with glasswool of a thickness of 30 cm. The steel pipes from the collectors to the tank are insulated with glasswool of a thickness of 3 cm.
As heat transfer means is water used and its circulation is monitored by PC. Fan coils are used for space heating in the building at 45 deg. C water temperature. An oil burned boiler is used alternatively and the overall system is controlled by a PC which receives data and information from thermometers from the water circuit and then processes it before sending the appropriate orders. An IBM PC 64K (plus real time clock) is used which in addition receives and stores the following data :
- solar radiation
- solar collector water temperature
- ambient temperature
- room temperature
- water storage temperature
- wind speed
- power consumption for pumps.
