SECOND GENERATION PASSIVE SOLAR HOUSES IN THE SUBSIDIZED HOUSING SECTOR (INTEGRATED SUN ROOM FACADES) THE NETHERLANDS

Obiettivo

To demonstrate the feasibility of a passive solar family house with an integrated sun room facade within Dutch subidized housing budget limits.
The innovative character of this project consists of its introduction of a second generation integrated sun room facade for low cost subsidized single family houses. The facade will be produced industrially. The project consists of 66 new single family houses with these passive solar facades. The roof of the houses is extended and a row of ventilation windows is applied at the top of the facade, the sliding door opens the facade for almost 50% and a sunshading/night insulation device. By these means overheating in spring and summer is avoided.
Special attention has been paid to ascertain an architecturally attractive solution. This housing concept : solar sun room as second facade and natural ventilation of the house, provides a very food, low energy housing solution in the the NW European sea climate.
The final product, including easy to make imrpovments, that has been demonstrated by the Spijkenisse project shows :
1. A passive solar energy design with a 'second skin' sunspace results in a single family house with a very low fule consumption for space heating, without the need to apply whatever complicated climate or ventilation control equipment. With a measured consumption of 600 m33 of natural gas equivalent (including auxiliary energy) for heating ans ventilation the fuel consumption equalizes the Mimimum Energy Houses.
2. This design creates almost perfect indoor climate conditions in the house :
- small temperature gradients
- small deviance between radiant and air twemperature
- no daraught
- a sunspace with a "Rome" climate in the Netherlands
- no overheating in spring and summer
- ample ventilation and good indoor air quality
- easy to operate by occupants, no auxiliary climate regulating equipment apart from the heating thermostat
3. The concept is passive (built into the construction) and has along lifetime of 50 years or more. This is much longer than installation-based energy efficient concepts, which usually have a lifetime of 15 years.
The design concept of the house is very simple :
1. South orientation of garden facade,
2. A two storey sun room facade (vertical glazing only), house wide and up to (extended) roof,
3. Closed and insulated sun room roof (extension of normal roof) with only two roof windows with transparent insolation for light and visual quality,
4. Single glazing sun room facade of limited air tightness (n-sun room approx. 2.0)
5. Ventilation air inlets from sun room facade to all south facing rooms.
6. Sun room can be opened 50% at ground floor (mainly in use during summer conditions),
A row of ventilation windows is applied at the top of the facade.
7. Integrated sunshading/night insulation by rolling curtains,
8. House design with separate (closed) kitchen,
9. Ventilation by natural ventilation ducts,
10. Heating by hot water radiator-heating system, applying predominantly single plate radiators to maximize the radiative heating component,
11. Simplified outer facade between living room andsun room with respect to materials and rain tightness but with good insulation (R=3.0 double glazing) and good air tightness (n-living room = 0.7).
The innovative character of this project consists of its introduction of a second generation integrated sun room facade for low cost social single family houses. The facade will be produced industrially. The project consists of 50 new single family houses with these passive solar facades. Special attention has been paid to ascertain an architecturally attractive solution.
