USE OF PASSIVE SOLAR ENERGY IN SECOND GENERATIONS GLASS EXTENSIONS

Obiettivo

In this project glass extensions are established in connection with Urban Renewal to existing apartment buildings. The demonstration project aims to show a larger energy utilization and a price reduction following the commercial sale.
Three system solutions are being constructed, representing a direct development of first generation glass extensions, but using different materials in the construction system: Laminated wood, steel and concrete.
The three systems are being erected in the same neighbourhood in the Municipality of Frederiksberg, thereby having a great demonstration value.
The projects represent new system solutions concerning glass extensions, as regards the fundamental constructions. The glass extensions are designed to maximise the use of the solar energy available.
The temperature measurements and the following calculations shows an energy savings at 12% of the energy consumptions for heating the flats; the demonstration project shows that in the future a price reduction can be expected due to the commercial sale;
In all three extensions every apartment in the building gets a glass covered balcony, which is saving the energy used for heating the apartment.
In sunny periods the solar radiation will heat the southfacing facades and glass extensions of the buildings. A part of the solar radiation will be passing through the glass extension and the behind lying windows, thus the inner building is being directly heated by the solar income. Heat from the glass extension is transfered into the building with the ventilated air, which mainly goes through the glass extension.
A part of the solar heat is being accumulated in the outer walls of the buildings, consisting of solid bricks. In the glass extension at Godthaebsvej 11, accumulates a part of the heat also in the extensions concrete elements. After a sunny period accumulated heat slowly transfers partly to preheating of the ventilation air, partly directly from the walls to the inner building.
In longer periods without any solar radiation, theglass extension will also have saving effect, this by its direct heat insulating effect.
In the further development of the system solutions importance is attached to :
- Improving and simplifying the solutions.
- Material savings in for instance the fundamental constructions.
- Use of components and materials suited for mass production, and suited for partial industrialization of the production of the glass extension.
- Different solutions as to the choice of material for the fundamental constructions (wood, steel and concrete), resulting in varied architectonic expressions and by competition resulting in involving various different types of companies.
- The implementation of the demonstration project should bring about a close cooperation between the suppliers and establish an efficiency and a cost reduction of the production. Hereby improving an actual mass production.
